Florida Turnpike

Mile marker 130 in 1981

Mile marker 174 in 2011

The photos in this file are of the location on the Florida Turnpike where Adam’s severed head was found. In 1981 this location was mile marker 130. Due to the extension of the turnpike to Homestead Florida, all the mile markers have changed and it is now mile marker 174. The footbridge was used to provide access to a water measuring device but has not been used in quite some time and the Lock Box with the measuring device is gone. You can see how much the area has changed over the past 30 years. The foot bridge is dilapidated. The water lever has dropped dramatically and the pond is overgrown with water hyacinth. The fence is still there. Although in the 1981 photo it is difficult to see due to the blue water.

Dahmer, was seen on this bridge just past midnight, at 00:30 am, on August 7, 1981, three days before the head was found on August 10, 1981. That witness, a Publix supermarket truck driver, said he had seen a white male with a flashlight, taking something “round” out of a “white bucket” and throwing it into the water. He also observed a “Blue Van” parked on the shoulder of the road with the middle passenger-side door open. On August 11, when he heard on the news about the severed head being found at this location, he called the Hollywood Police. They dismissed him with, “Yea, Yea, we already know about the blue van... It has nothing to do with the Adam Walsh case.”

A total of four witnesses that called the HPD, were all dismissed with similar statements. Two called on August 11, and two on August 12, 1981. Keep in mind, over 30 years have passed, the bridge is dilapidated. The water would be flowing in a direction toward the fence. The head was found by two fishermen, next to that fence. They launched a rowboat from the north bank. When they discovered a head floating in the water, they rowed back to the pier and called the police from their truck.
